Surfing has become more mainstream than ever before. Surfing is barging into popular culture and knocking football off its top spot as a sport people desire to master and excel at. Images of surfing can be found now on adverts for new shopping centres – see St Austell’s White River complex, and even adverts on TV. I saw one last night where Father Christmas gave up giving presents out, and went off to surf! Whatever next?

Amongst all this dross there are some great places on the web and in real life, to find out more about surfing. Here are our top recommendations:

1- Windguru

Our number one site for budding meteorologists to analyse the results of wavebouys and weather stations to give you the most accurate surf forecasting on the web. Windguru

2 – Magic Seaweed

Also known as Tragic Seaweed for its frequent forecasting of 10ft swells that turn out to be 3ft ones! Its worth a look to compare with windguru and to read the more accurate eyeball surf report. Magicseaweed

3 – ASP world tour

The annual World Cup of surfing. The best surfers and occasionally rank outsiders ‘wild cards’ battle it out at the best wave spots in the world. Watch the stars on their live webcam. ASP World Tour

4 – The Museum of British Surfing

An homage to Britsurf, hopefully soon to get its own permanant home in Saunton, Devon. Museum of British Surfing

5 – Surfing blogs

Blogs often have genuine chat and great photos of local sufers. Try Surftwisted Magazine. It does lean on the laddish side of surfing, but the photography is always stunning.

For something different try Alex Wade’s blog Surf Nation about life and surfing. Currently he’s chatting about his injury, sadly keeping him out of the water, hopefully not forever.

6 – Surf Films

There are loads of surf films available where you can watch beautiful waves and great surfing from the comfort of your sofa. From the legendary Big Wednesday to the little known 1960′s film Come surf with me. Our favourite is Shelter, a great mix of music and waves. Pause, rewind, and playback again and again!  Shelter

7 – Surfing

Try it out and experience what all the fuss is about! We’ve put this last, not because it’s not important, (it’s the most important thing of all!) but because if you do the others first, you’ll find nothing compares to being in the ocean, riding waves, and that feeling of freedom you get from being outdoors. So come one of of our surf holidays and find out! Morocco in January 2010, or France in June 2010
