Wind! We’ve had our fair share of it this year in North Cornwall! Only good for drying washing? No good for staying outdoors? Well its also good for surf….Wind direction and speed are important for surfing because they have an effect on the surf, in particular on the quality and height of the waves.

Ideal surfing conditions are where the wind is offshore – which means coming from the land directly out to sea. This offshore wind should be strong enough to hold the waves up, but not too strong. And the swell should be of good quality and height. 2-3ft plus would be great, with a good wave period of 10 seconds or more, indicating a long-distance swell. With all these conditions in place the surf should be awesome!

So we might not like the wind, but don’t wish for a calm wind-free day until you know what your waves are doing!
