Kelly Slater returns to Margaret River
0Surfing legend Kelly Slater entered the Telstra Drug Aware Pro at Margaret River, Western Australia for the first time since he entered the competition back in 1993.
This ‘Prime’ event on the ASP world tour attracts the top surfers with big prize money. Conditions were tough, with just 2 wave sets, and Slater did just enough to get through to the next round. Mick Fanning scored the day’s top scoring ride with a 9.0.
Margaret River is set to see some big surf right now and the event should get exciting with 20ft sets predicted! Watch it on live stream at www.asp.com

Kiribati joins the ISA
0You may well have heard of Kiribati – but can you remember why? Well you’ll be reminded of it each year at New Year’s Eve because it’s the first (inhabited) place in the world to enter the new year!
It has now gained another accolade – joining the International Surfing Association (ISA). The ISA is recognised by the International Olympic Committee as the World Governing Authority for Surfing. It was originally founded as the International Surfing Federation in 1964 and has been running Open Division World Championships since 1964, Junior World Championships since 1980, and Masters World Championships since 2007. The ISA will hold the first Stand Up Paddle (SUP) World Championship in 2011. Joining the ISA will mean Kiribati will be able to be involved in surfing at a world level, and be part of the professionalism of the sport on the international stage. More on the ISA can be found here
Kiribati is made up of 32 islands in the Pacific Ocean; find it by looking at Papua New Guinea on a map and go right, into the new time zone. Surfing is everywhere in Kiribati, and with warm water and good swells, it will no doubt become a famous surfing destination.

Panamanian surfs into Guinness book of records
0Gary Saavedra surfed for three hours and 55 minutes on a 41.3-mile wave created by a power boat, breaking 2 world records – longest time surfing a non-static wave, and longest wave ever surfed.
Saavedra, who is the 13-time national Panamanian surfing champion, surfed a non-static wave created by a wakesurfing power boat down the Panama Canal. He had to overcome 20-knot winds and large vessels that were making the water conditions unstable, as well as sheer exhaustion. He ended his wave at the Amador Causeway in the southern entrance of the Panama Canal.
The previous records was held by Steve King, from the UK, who surfed this type of wave for one hour and six minutes in 2006.
