Jeffrey’s Bay is small town that has grown up around its surf culture, but there is more than just surfing here. There is a cinema and a selection of boutique shops, lots of good discount surf shops, and plenty of places to buy food and eat out.

In the area there are large nature reserves, game parks and rivers. You can choose from a variety of activities, if you can fit them in between surfing! There are hiking trails, bungee jumping, river rafting, angling, boating, horse riding, swimming pools as well as museums, golf courses and much more.

Our surf camp

Our surf camp is based in a beautiful guest house located in Jeffrey’s Bay, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Also known as J-Bay, it is situated at the end of the famous Garden Route; the scenic stretch of coast from Heidelberg to the Storms River.

J-Bay is around an hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth airport, and the surf here really is world-famous….. These South African waves became legendary amongst the surfing community as the home of the ‘perfect wave’ by the film Endless Summer. The film follows 2 surfers travelling the world in search of the perfect wave. After a long search they find it in South Africa at Cape St Francis, near to Jeffrey’s Bay. In the second film they return to South Africa and find Jeffrey’s Bay, which surpasses the waves of the first film!

The guest house is set in its own gardens, with private lawns down to the beach. It has excellent facilities such as daily room service, decked sun-terraces, a well equipped kitchen, large lounge with ipod docking station, BBQ, laundry facilities and much more. All the rooms are individually decorated and all the rooms and communal areas are serviced daily. Some rooms have their own private sun terraces and bathrooms. With a variety of rooms to choose from, there’s a room to suit your budget and requirements.

Surfing

The reason we travel all the way to Jeffrey’s Bay is that the surf just so good! The waves at ‘Point’ (where we surf most of the time) are absolutely the best for learning and improving your surfing. They are nice and mellow, and peel for 200m plus, giving you time to practise your surfing turns and techniques.

There are different quality waves close to our guest house. It’s an uncrowded, friendly place to surf, with more surf breaks further along the Bay!

Our guest house overlooks the best waves in the Bay (West to East):

1. Dolphin beach – this beach break has a sand bottom and nice mellow peaks.
2. Kitchen windows – this is mellow lefts and rights
3. Magnatubes – a right hand reef break suitable for intermediate surfers
4. Boneyards – fast, challenging waves….which connects into……
5. Supertubes – is a long section with fast walls, and tube sections
6. Tubes – another section of the point with good, fast and often hollow waves
7. Point – the perfect wave for the less experienced surfers. Excellent peeling mellow waves, with very long rides. Excellent for practising your surfing techniques.
8. Albatross – another uncrowded quality mellow wave

Our surf tour guides are fully qualified Surfing GB surf (SGB) coaches and SGB members. Dan, our Senior Surf Tour Guide is a Level 2 Coach and has over 20 years experience surfing all over the world. He has been surf coaching in Newquay for the last 6 years.
Each day our surf tour guides get you surfing the waves as often as you like. We can use video-analysis for surf coaching, as well as one-to-one coaching in the surf and on the beach. Surf coaching is optional so if you come with the group you can free-surf with us, and enjoy the relaxed, friendly and sociable surf camp atmosphere.

Activities

There is plenty to do in the local area if you are having a rest day from surfing. There are cafes, bars and restaurants around the town, a good cinema, and a few large discount surf stores for some good bargains.
Close to town you can go horse riding, sand boarding, white water rafting, canopy tours, marine tours, scuba diving, bungee jumping, fishing, abseiling, game parks, safari drives and much more.

We include a trip to the amazing Addo Elephant National Park in your holiday. Addo National Park is the 3rd largest in South Africa and covers about 180 000 hectares (444,700 acres) and includes the Bird and St Croix Island groups.
This finely tuned ecosystem is sanctuary to over 550 elephants, lions, buffalo, black rhino, spotted hyena, leopard, a variety of antelope and zebra species, as well as the unique Addo flightless dung beetle! It’s a great trip out, and all part of your holiday.

South African Climate

The climate in Jeffrey’s Bay is thought to be one if the most favourable to man because it has the mildest climate in South Africa, and the second mildest climate in the world, after Hawaii (according to the Guinness Book of Records). Temperatures rarely fall below 10°C in winter and rarely climb beyond 28°C in summer. This makes it a great place for a holiday!

May is a great time to visit Jeffrey’s Bay. It is late autumn in South Africa, and this usually means warm sunshine, and warm daytime temperatures, with highs of around 21C.

This important thing about travelling to Jeffrey’s Bay in May is that this time of year brings consistent great waves! This time of year brings constant swells wrapping into Jeffrey’s Bay, with average wave heights 3-5 ft for around 80% of the month. The water temperature is around 18C, so a 3:2 full suit is adequate for surfing. The winds are also favourable at this time of year, normally there are light to moderate off-shores most of the time. All this adds up to good clean rideable waves, day after day.
