Cycling is the best and cheapest way to get aruond the area in South West France on our France Surf Holiday. You can hire a bike with helmet and bike lock near our campsite for a day or the week.

The roads are very safe to bike on and there are some lovely cycle paths around the woods behind the campsite. You can easily get to Hossegor by bike and of course, home again, but be careful if cycling after drinking! Of course we don’t recommend you cycle if you are under the influence!

Cycling is a great way to keep fit and helps your surfing; cycling strengthens your legs and excercises your lungs as well as your core. So get on your bike, and get fit out of the water as well as in it!

The difference in the weather is quite amazing. Yesterday Seignosse had 21C water temperature and was sunny and hot. The surf was small but clean. Temperatures are due to average 31C next week! Ahhhh, bliss!

Its only 8 weeks to go till our next surf holiday!

We will be driving the minibus down from Newquay to Portsmouth on the 7th September.  We cross the English Channel to Le Havre by ferry. We then drive down to Seignosse near Hossegor in South West France The journey is about 700 miles!

It’s very picturesque, passing through some amazing French regions, past the towns of Nantes, Niort, Bordeaux, and down to Seignosse.

This topFrench location is in the region of Landes. The area has an interesting history, and was not always so welcoming! The Landes region is flat and the soil is uniformly sandy. One hundred years ago, the land was a boggy swamp filled with disease and the coastline was unstable.

The law imposed by Emperor Napoleon III in 1857, ordered all the communes of Gascogne Landes, not just the coastline, be drained and then planted with maritime pines, making the land useable and rich. Bit by bit, pines covered Les Landes, changing the landscape and reducing the expanse of more than 100,000 hectares of moors. This made room for the young forest that would become one of the largest industrial forests in Europe. The dunes were also created to protect the newly recovered land from the sea.

Today the region is really beautiful; made up of large plantations and a coastline of flat sandy beaches, backed by large shifting sand dunes which are nature conservation areas.

All this work means that we can reach all those surf breaks along the coast, and we can enjoy the land of Landes too!

This week we have been considering our France surf tour. We’ve been planning logistics and where to surf.

There are plenty of spots to surf along the coast near Seignosse. Hossegor and Biarritz are well known, but there are plenty of other great places with less crowds and great waves.

Pros were spotted everywhere, surfing the breaks early in the mornings, and at night in restaurants and bars in Hossegor town.

One afternoon we turned up at the competition site just in time to see an amazing sight. The perfect 10!

Kiren Perrow was surfing against Mick Fanning. Kiren took off on the wave, and after only one sharp turn, he seemed to make a decision, and instead of turning again, he headed straight across the wave. We all waited to see what would happen to him. As we watched the sea scooped up and over him, and the whole crowd caught their breath – expecting to see the usual close-out and a very painful wipe-out, but… to everyones surprise a beautiful barrel formed with Kiren inside. After a few seconds, out he popped the other end as clean as a whistle! The crowd went mad – cheering and clapping, the commentator announced ‘dix’ and above the noise you could hear a shout of ‘au-revoir Fanning’ in a strong French accent ………really funny! Watch it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51D1nG9gBko

The weather has been amazing – temperatures peaked at 27C and the sea was a balmy 22C. The surf offered us a couple of clean days with some head high waves and dropped off later in the week. The group got some really good waves.

Surfing highlights included Rachel’s epic day of perfect long left-handers, and Tim and Matt’s surf-fest, where they seemed to be getting back in the sea every 1/2 hour! Penny made a sterling effort to push her surfing up a notch, and stood up on the board many times over their week’s holiday – well done Penny! Olly made an impression on his fellow surfers and was greeted to sounds of Allez Allez!! each time he went for a wave! If there was a prize for most wipe-outs – Lauren would have won hands down! She is now an expert on surviving a French beach break on the head!

The whole group has had fun this week, and the coming week is looking good with more warm weather and surf picking up again with new swell.

The surfing  forecast shows big swells over the coming days, so we are looking forward to hearing about their surfing adventures!
